Stourbridge Grove Site
Stourbridge is the larger of the two RTDGS sites (3.44 hectares), with almost twice the number of plots that exist at the Fairfax site. It has a secluded, rural feel, hidden away among the trees between Coldham’s Lane and the railway. The main entrance is via the gate on Stourbridge Grove Road; to access, turn into Stourbridge Grove Road from Coldham’s Lane and then turn right, following the road until you see the gate in front of you. There is only very limited parking in the area.
The site offers full and half plots (note: it is policy for new members to start with a half plot). The communal orchard and BBQ area provide plot holders with a venue for community gatherings. One such is the Wassail celebration in January: following ancient folk traditions, the trees are awakened from their winter slumber and toasts are made in hopes of a bountiful harvest. Apple juice and mulled cider are drunk while traditional music is played.
All plots have access to water troughs, although we encourage rainwater collection and cultivation practices that minimise the need for water, a scarce and expensive resource in Cambridge. Plots are well served by proximity to the Allotment Shop, many have sheds or greenhouses, several plots have chickens, and at least two have bee hives.
The RTDGS shop, which serves both Stourbridge and Fairfax plot holders, is open for one hour a day on Saturdays and Sundays during spring and summer (but closed during the August holidays). It is stocked with a good range of useful items, such as compost, fleece, weed control fabric, fertilisers, canes, netting, and more.
